Proposal

My Idea

My concept for this game is that you have arrived at an abandoned mansion/military base. The next helicopter back is in the morning so you have to survive the night, but it turns out things are not quite as normal. The player will have to solve puzzles to discover and expose the secrets that lie within these grounds. Doing so, the player will have to attack enemies with a handgun fighting for survival till the morning. I want to later add the option of shotguns and knives to enhance the players experience.

I will be using Unity as the game engine, Visual studio for coding/camera transitions, also Youtube and Unity forums will be used for tutorials to create the movement. Puzzles will be created using Unity's UI manager. I’m looking to complete the production within 4-5 weeks of starting, mainly working Monday, Thursday and Friday as I am occupied with work on the rest of the days.

The main technical challenges I may face during this process is going to be the camera positions and triggers. I will have to make the triggers activate multiple times which I haven't done before, I will also have to get constant feedback from camera angles to make sure the player can see the character but also the level.

For gameplay feedback, I will ask multiple peers to playtest the demo and fill out a google form asking about their experiences, any bugs and anything I should change and repeat until there is little to no critiques.

Rationale

I have chosen engine production mainly because I always wanted to create games, specifically within the horror genre as I have a very keen interest for this type of game play. For this fmp I want to create a puzzle/horror game that entices the players brain by giving them restrictive movement mechanics and I am going to explore how restricted movement can change the whole feel of a game and be stressful for the player.

As previously mentioned, puzzle and horror games are one of my favourite genres, but I have never explored or personally created this type of genre based game, so I am going to incorporate these themes within this game and I am looking forward to a whole new experience as I'm only accustomed to creating simple demos with different genres e.g. vr action, simple puzzles.

Evaluation

This section will provide me an opportunity to explain how I am going to reflect on and evaluate not only my research, my final product, as both a continuing activity and at the complete end of my project. I will describe how I intend to record my decision making by using my wix site I have set up and a youtube production video of my project and on these sites I will document changes to my ideas as my work progresses and describe why I came to that conclusion and how did I accomplish it.

I am also going to get my fellow classmates to playtest it and fill out questions on a discord server asking about their experiences and the main question will be did the movement create a tense feeling of stress or nervousness.
